Overview

About Paykal

A municipal payments platform used for online purchases such as licenses, tickets, and city services. Many buyers don’t have an account and want to pay quickly. Typical users are occasional residents purchasing a single service and returning payers who don’t want a full account.

The Project

The project started after repeated complaints about the checkout process. Users had to re-enter all their details for every purchase, causing frustration and drop-offs. I designed a verified guest checkout using ID number + OTP to enable faster transactions and purchase history without full registration.

The Challenge

The previous flow mixed identity collection, profile creation, and payment into one heavy form. Business required order history for support and receipts, while users wanted one-step payment. We needed a solution that satisfies both without changing the payment gateway or compliance constraints.

Our Goal

Reduce cart abandonment, keep order history for guests, and improve trust and completion rates to reduce the number of support requests.

Laying the Foundation

As part of the redesign, I revisited the system’s information architecture.

The old interface was fragmented and had inconsistencies, with key features hidden or scattered. I reorganized it into a more predictable hierarchy, improving discoverability.

Conclusion

I began with a traditional GIS layout, where the header served as the main navigation to maximize map space. I also explored a role-based view, offering residents a minimal interface while giving professionals a full toolset.

Ultimately, this approach was not scalable due to a lack of hierarchy for a long list of layers and high development costs, prompting me to pivot to a different solution.
